About our Guildford salsa venue
Here is some more information about our Guildford salsa venue. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
Parking
There is free parking at the venue and also the roads surrounding "The Aggie" are residential and free to park in.
Drinks
The salsa venue is attached to a social club with a fully licensed bar available to our dancers. Therefore we respectfully request that dancers refrain from bringing in their own drinks to the venue.
The venue
Our Guildford salsa venue is a function room belonging to, and adjacent to The Agricultural Club. It is a very large hall with a fairly high ceiling and a stage, access to the bar and toilets. It has its own separate entrance in from the car park. The social club entrance (around the side of the building) is controlled by members only key cards. The hall has recently been redecorated.
Dancefloor
Although the dancefloor at the Guildford venue is not wooden it is quite a smooth floor without any stickiness and gripping that can be associated with non wooden floors. It is also quite large which gives plenty of space for our salsa dancers.
Standard of dancers
We have a mixed range of salsa dancers in Guildford, from complete beginners through to experienced dancers, all who intermingle and socialise together. After all, it's more of a challenge for experienced dancers to lead/follow unpredictable beginners and obviously the more our beginners get to practise the quicker they become experienced!
Our crew are also mixed ability from Emz (usually seen on the door) who is fairly new to salsa, through to Noel and Jules who have been dancing far too many years to count! We pride ourselves on being friendly and welcoming no matter whether it's your first or hundredth salsa class. We are happy to dance with anyone so please come and ask us, if we don't ask you first that is!
The lessons
We usually start with beginners moves unless there are no beginners present, in which case we would simply do more improvers moves instead. The beginners moves are the same each week, but we may vary the hold or practise some lead and follow techniques.
After the beginners moves we take a short break for people to grab drinks, make notes etc., then we progress to improvers moves. All students are expected to join in even if it's your first night as the class is taught at a pace that is easy to follow, even for newcomers.
There is then another short break after which we progress to intermediate moves. Anyone is welcome to attempt the class, but beginners may find this class too difficult and prefer to practise the beginners and improvers moves instead. We usually have an experienced dancer on hand to help you practise.
The crew
Jules is your teacher - she is UKA qualified as a salsa teacher and has a history of teaching modern jive, salsafit and pilates among other things.
Barry or Emz are usually on the door to welcome you - Emz, who is fairly new but now addicted to salsa, often participates in the dancing too. Barry is also fairly new to salsa and will dance occasionally but only if nagged or given alcohol!
Noel is an experienced dancer usually on hand to help beginners practise during the intermediate class.
Dave is an experienced dancer who often covers when Noel is abroad with work, and helps out the beginners during the intermediate class.
The music
We play a wide mix of music from traditional salsa tunes to Latin pop, salsa remixes of well known hits, R&B, salsa fusion, and if requested we will also play some Bachata, Merengue, Tango, etc - pretty much whatever you fancy if we've got it. And if we haven't got it we will try to get it for next time, so let us know what your requests are!
